From Child Care Aware of America - The FY 2018 budget proposal by the Trump
administration was released today. And it’s not looking good for children and families.
The working version of the budget currently includes severe cuts to programs that benefit parents, providers, teachers and most importantly children.
Here is what you should know:
The Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) would be cut by $95 million in FY 2018, possibly putting several hundred thousand children at-risk of losing access to care next year alone.
An $85 million cut for Head Start, which includes the Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership program.
The elimination of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program, which supports afterschool activities including child care.
Ending the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program, which supports low-income parents receive a college education while providing child care services.
Major changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is the federal food stamp program that served roughly 44 million people in 2016.
Medicaid, which provides health care coverage for low-income families, would be cut by more than $800 billion over 10 years.
These are just a few of the cuts being made. Slashing funding for programs that many low-income families count on is not the answer for a stronger economy.
We need your help and support so that all families can continue to receive access to programs that enrich our earliest learners. Ask your members of Congress to STOP the $95M in cuts to CCDBG, protect food assistance programs, and nix cuts to child care options for students and families using campus, community, and afterschool care.
